This is a demo of cupping massage from a massage therapist friend of mine. Looks like a great way to increase circulation and probably enhance tissue healing.  Should be an option for those who don’t tolerate deep tissue massage very well.

Tornadoes, Snakes, and Beatdowns

Mar 15 · by Brian

Tornadoes, snakes and beatdowns are descriptions of some of the rope training we do.  Ropes are a part of the cardio strength training I do with my clients.  Besides getting your heart rate up in a hurry, its a “fun” way to do your workout.

Monday is cardio day at the studio and I have them move from one exercise to the next with little rest in between.  This form of interval workout trains your cardio and muscular systems at the same time for maximum efficiency.

Total body workouts are a great way to build a lean, athletic physique in sessions lasting 40 minutes.  What’s that old Army commercial about getting more done before 7a.m.?  Same type of principle – we get more work done in less time.

Studies show that this type of training can elevate your metabolism for 24 hours or more after the workout.  Work harder and work smarter if you’re not getting the results you want.

These joint friendly workouts are also done by my clients in their 50’s – all but the agility ladder, though some can do this as well.

Chia Seeds Update – Iskiate Drink

Mar 09 · by Brian

I learned of chia seeds and the many health benefits of consuming them, such as the very high anti-oxidant content, omega-3 fatty acids, fiber and protein, a little more than a year ago.

I have taken them off and on during that time, either in a protein drink or in my oatmeal (steel cut oats).  They were regarded as a super food among the ancient Aztecs.  They are reported to give you increased energy and endurance.

Recently, I have been reading the book Born to Run by Chris McDougall about the endurance feats of the Tarahumara Indians of Mexico’s Copper Canyons.  Its a fascinating and well written book that looks at endurance running from an interesting perspective.

One particular drink that they consume is Iskiate (chia fresca).  It is made from a brew of chia seeds, lime, and some honey, though there might be other variations, as well.  In the book this concoction was given to the author and also was reported to aid another explorer as he made the climb out of the deep valleys in the region.

This “new” energy drink might be something to consider as a healthier alternative to sodas and some of the commercial energy drinks available.  To see one recipe for this drink go to Runner’s World.

This may be something to help with weight loss as it helps you feel full and may keep your insulin levels from spiking.  You might also be interested in my previous article on chia seeds.

Get Ready for Spring Training

Mar 02 · by Brian

Baseball players have started Spring training and one coach has integrated a unique exercise tool into his team’s regimen.

Detroit Tigers head Strength and Conditioning Coach Javair Gillett is using the TRX suspension trainer to prepare his athletes for the grueling 162 game season. Besides the versatility of the exercises you can do, he likes it for training on the road, when they are away from their training facility at Tigers’ Stadium. It fits into a small pouch and is very portable.

It allows you to train different qualities which are vital to sports performance, like balance, strength, flexibility and core stability. He believes it has a strong carryover to athletic movements.

Strengthening the mid and upper back is important for trying to prevent shoulder injuries.  It is an area that needs to be strong for posture reasons, also.

Not just for athletes, Gillett thinks it is a great training tool for everyone. “If you improve your athleticism you’ll improve the quality of your life. The TRX lets you do that, anywhere.”
